  24.                     INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  27. To install the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III driver:
  28.  
  29.  
  30.         1.      If you already have a LaserJet III printer installed, skip
  31.                 to step 2.  If you do not have a LaserJet III currently
  32.                 installed, you must first follow the standard Windows driver
  33.                 installation procedure and install the LaserJet III driver,
  34.                 HPPCL5A.DRV, that came with Windows 3.0.
  35.  
  36.         2.      Use DOS or the Windows 3.0 File Manager to copy the new
  37.                 PCL5 / HP LaserJet III driver files from the driver disk
  38.                 to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.   These files are named:
  39.  
  40.                         HPPCL5A.DRV
  41.                         HPPCL5A.HLP
  42.  
  43.         3.      If you are installing a new printer, rather than just
  44.                 updating the driver, follow the Windows instructions for
  45.                 configuring printers.

  50.                            NEW FEATURES

  53. The Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III Printer Driver (filename HPPCL5A.DRV)
  54. version 3.60 contains the following new features:
  55.  
  56.   *  Support of two new Hewlett-Packard scalable typeface cartridges:
  57.  
  58.        Brilliant Presentations I/Compelling Publications II
  59.        Distinctive Documents I/Compelling Publications I
  60.  
  61.        The cartridges can be selected from the cartridge list in the
  62.        Printer Setup dialog box.  Each cartridge font is available in
  63.        the Windows ANSI (WN) symbol set, with the exception of Zapf
  64.        Dingbats, which is available in the following symbol sets:
  65.        Series 100 (D1), Series 200 (D2), Series 300 (D3), and
  66.        Postscript (DS).
  67.  
  68.   *  Support of the Hewlett-Packard WordPerfect bitmapped font cartridge.
  69.  
  70.   *  Faster printing of graphics.
  71.  
  72.        In 386 mode, the speed of printing graphics has been
  73.        significantly improved for applications that use metafiles.
  74.        The speed of printing bitmaps has not been affected.
  75.  
  76.   *  Ability to use reverse type (white text on solid background).
  77.  
  78.   *  Support for changing print direction on a single page in
  79.      90 degree increments (0, 90, 180, 270 degrees).

  81.   *  Two graphic appearance selections -- Gray Scale Graphics
  82.      "on" or "off" --
  83.  
  84.        The Printer Setup dialog box in the Windows Control Panel
  85.        allows you to choose Gray Scale Graphics.
  86.  
  87.        For an improved photographic appearance, turn on Gray Scale
  88.        Graphics.  Your images will have smooth, soft looking contrasts
  89.        between shades of gray.  Images originally designed with color
  90.        will print better too.
  91.  
  92.        For images that have a "line draw" look, turn off Gray Scale
  93.        Graphics.  Though the fine details of line work will be
  94.        clear, the contrasts between shaded areas can appear harsh.
  95.  
  96.   *  Selection of envelope paper sizes.
  97.  
  98.   *  Help file updated.
  99.  
  100.   *  Changes to font symbol set references
  101.  
  102.        To provide WYSIWYG capabilities, user-selected symbol sets
  103.        are now printed as they are defined, instead of being
  104.        remapped or translated to the Windows ANSI set.  For
  105.        example, Roman-8 fonts now print according to the Roman-8
  106.        mapping, rather than Windows ANSI.
  107.  
  108.        In internal fonts, scalable cartridge fonts, and Type Director
  109.        fonts, the symbol set appears as part of the font name in the
  110.        application's font menu.  In these cases, the symbol set is
  111.        represented by a two character abbreviation in parentheses.

  115.  
  116.        Where XX represents the two character symbol set code.

  121.                       OTHER ENHANCEMENTS

  124. The following enhancements have been made to Version 3.6
  125. of the Hewlett-Packard Windows Printer Driver.  These include:

  127.   *  Paper Size selections in the menu are correct.
  128.  
  129.   *  Error 20 PRINT OVERRUN no longer occurs when printing a rule
  130.      around the page using PageMaker.

  134.                           USER HINTS

  137. Note the following information:
  138.  
  139.   *  The ability to print reverse text on patterned rules
  140.      is not supported.
  141.  
  142.   *  A to Z Font Cartridges
  143.  
  144.      Traditional font support information (PCM files) are available
  145.      for the Hewlett-Packard font cartridges A through Z on the
  146.      HP forum on CompuServe.
  147.

  150.                       WORD FOR WINDOWS NOTE
  151. =====================================================================
  152.  
  153. Microsoft's Word for Windows does not immediately recognize fonts
  154. installed by font management programs such as Hewlett-Packard's Type Director.
  155.  
  156. To cause new fonts to appear in the Word for Windows font list,
  157. take the following steps:
  158.  
  159.   1.  Select Printer Setup from the "File" menu.
  160.  
  161.   2.  Click the "Setup" button to bring up the printer setup
  162.       dialog box.
  163.  
  164.   3.  Click the "Fonts" button to bring up the font installer.
  165.  
  166.   4.  Exit the font installer by clicking, "Exit."
  167.  
  168.   5.  Click "OK" -- not "Cancel" -- at each dialog box until
  169.       you return to the main menu.
